How Yadira Harrison and Shannon Jones of Verb, Own It
Hi and welcome to the OWN IT podcast, where we celebrate the growing number of (women and non-binary) ad agency owners and talk about buying out of the boys’ club of advertising, one agency at a time.
On this episode, we're talking to two amazing female owners … Yadira Harrison and Shannon Jones of Verb. Both came into the agency world from the entertainment segment. Yadira even worked on the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
The two met working at an agency on the AirBnB business. We talked about the organic way they evolved to ownership, the early and often challenging conversations about revenue and bootstrapping, and the building blocks of Verb from its launch to now.
One thing that stood out you should listen for is something Yadira said … there’s a difference in working in the business, versus working on the business. So very true.
The energy and chemistry these two bring to the table is enviable. We learned so much. We know you will, too.

Key Takeaways
EPISODE: Shannon Jones and Yadira Harrison of Verb
1. The importance of having a clear and honest conversation about finances when starting a business | [00:25:37]
When embarking on entrepreneurship, especially when bootstrapping, it's crucial to have transparent and frank discussions about financial realities. This includes acknowledging that there won't be a regular paycheck initially and ensuring all partners are mentally and financially prepared for the sacrifice required.
2. The distinction between working "in the business" versus "on the business" | [00:29:14]
Early-stage business owners often find themselves spending a disproportionate amount of time working "in" the business, focusing on day-to-day operations and client demands. While crucial for client satisfaction, dedicating time "on" the business—to infrastructure, operations, strategic planning, and business development—is vital for sustainable growth and long-term success.
3. The power of shared trust and complementary working styles in co-ownership | [00:32:48]
For co-founders, particularly those who operate bi-coastally, a deep level of trust and complementary working styles are essential. This goes beyond a professional relationship, extending to personal friendship, constant communication, and a "yin and yang" approach where both partners are aware of each other's responsibilities and actively collaborate rather than solely dividing tasks.
4. The need for advertising to create creative work that makes people feel "seen, valued, and connected" | [00:45:33]
Advertising has a powerful role beyond selling products; it shapes culture and conversations. The goal should be to create campaigns that resonate deeply with audiences, making them feel understood and connected. This approach emphasizes the social impact of advertising and the responsibility to use its power for positive influence, moving beyond just commercial gains.
