How Sophia Johnson of ABI, Owns It

Hi and welcome to the OWN IT podcast, where we celebrate the growing number of (women and non-binary) ad agency owners and talk about buying out of the boys’ club of advertising, one agency at a time.

Today, we’re talking to Sophia Johnson of Alpha Business Images or ABI. Sophia calls herself a gatherer of people and is very focused on her family. But she extends that definition beyond her husband, children and relatives to the family around her business and clients.

She worked her way up through a financial services company, but was drawn to the marketing side of the business. She wound up managing the agency relationships and learned how to build a brand from that side of the aisle.

I so love Sophia’s story and her family-centric approach to both life and business. I think you’ll see why today on the podcast.

Key Takeaways

EPISODE: Sophia Johnson of Alpha Business Images

1. Values-Driven Entrepreneurship | 00:04:06

Sophia Johnson's drive to ensure her family's security has been the primary fuel for her agency's success, demonstrating that deep-seated personal values, rather than pure capitalist ambition, can be a powerful motivator for entrepreneurship. This family-centric approach also extends to how she builds relationships with her business community and clients.

2. The Power of a Strong Brand | 00:07:43

Sophia learned firsthand from her experience at a startup that building a strong brand can lead to significant financial rewards and entrepreneurial success. Her previous company was sold to a major corporation, illustrating how a well-established brand can be a valuable asset for acquisition.

3. The Entrepreneur's Challenge of Sales | 00:10:50

A major initial hurdle for Sophia when starting her agency was the necessity of actively selling services, a stark contrast to working in a corporate environment where business often comes internally. Overcoming this involved dedicated sales coaching and a pivotal moment of external encouragement that validated her entrepreneurial path.

4. Redefining Success Based on Original Goals | 00:15:29

Sophia initially started her agency to have the flexibility to prioritize her family, be involved in her children's lives, and ensure their education. A mentor helped her realize that by achieving these original goals, her company was already a "complete success," regardless of new, later-developed financial aspirations. This highlights the importance of measuring success against one's initial motivations rather than constantly shifting benchmarks.

5. Courage and Awareness for Women in Leadership | 00:22:12

For women to achieve greater ownership and leadership in the advertising industry, they need both courage and awareness. Courage to assert their position, start businesses, ask for promotions, and "sit at the head of the table." Awareness that these opportunities exist is also crucial to fostering this courage.
