How Shannon Gabor of Clever Creative, Owns It
On this week's episode of OWN IT, we’re talking to Shannon Gabor of Clever Creative. She has been an agency owner for almost 18 years, so we tapped into her wealth of experience in ownership.
Shannon came through the creative side of the business and, in a rather timely coincidence for what’s going on in the world today, she once worked on the licensing and packaging team at Mattel for the Barbie product line! And yes, I asked her to chime in on the amazing campaign we’re seeing today in support of the Barbie movie.
We also talked about her passion for cooking and travel. Her mother is Guatemalan, so the conversion diverted there to even more goodness!
Shannon was such a joy to talk to. You’re going to love this.

Key Takeaways
EPISODE: Shannon Gabor of Clever Creative
1. The Power of Organic Growth and Client Retention in Agency Success | 00:22:07
For sustained agency growth, especially for businesses that are self-funded, retaining clients and fostering organic growth within existing relationships is paramount. It's significantly harder to grow if you constantly have to replace lost business. Agencies should actively seek opportunities for organic growth by understanding and re-engaging with long-standing clients, keeping them informed of new services, capabilities, and pricing models to ensure they recognize the evolving value proposition.
2. Scaling an Agency Requires Strategic Talent and Financial Planning | 00:25:00
As an agency matures and employees gain more experience, operating costs increase. This necessitates attracting and retaining larger-scale accounts with appropriate financial commitments to maintain profit margins and growth. Founders must thoughtfully structure the organization and consider sustainable hiring practices to avoid over-committing to employees or drastic impacts on their lives due to account fluctuations, especially when self-funding.
3. The Importance of a Founder Stepping Back for Scalable Growth | 00:27:03
For an agency to truly scale beyond the founder's direct involvement, the founder must intentionally remove themselves from daily equations. While founders are crucial for vision and initial growth, empowering and trusting other team members to build client relationships and manage operations is essential. A key indicator of sustainable growth is when the agency can onboard new clients and employees, and generate revenue independently, allowing the founder to take breaks without business disruption.
4. The Value of Diverse Voices in Driving Brand Innovation | 00:37:14
A lack of diverse voices, particularly female agency owners, at the decision-making table hinders brand innovation and limits perspectives. Creative industries thrive on challenging norms and addressing new behaviors, which requires a wide array of viewpoints. Having women-led and women-owned agencies provides a uniquely different and invaluable perspective that helps brands authentically resonate with a broader consumer base and pushes the industry forward.
5. Finding Your "Why" as an Entrepreneur | 00:41:36
Before starting an agency, it's crucial to find clarity in your "why"—the fundamental purpose behind your venture. This clarity will define your agency's identity, who it serves, and the type of environment you're building. Understanding your personal brand and vision will serve as a North Star, guiding decisions and providing motivation during challenging times, ultimately contributing to the long-term success and fulfillment derived from your entrepreneurial journey.
