How Liz Seelye from StarryEyed Strategy, Owns It

This week on Own It we’re talking to Liz Seelye from StarryEyed Strategy. Her firm believes to be starryeyed means to be creative, collaborative and visionary so you can dream new ideas and make them a reality.

But she also has a renewable energy company with her husband, trail runs and has been to over 40 countries, a dozen or so with one or more of her five children.

As you can tell, Liz is multifaceted and fascinating. We had such a great conversation and, of course, got into the challenges of the gender gap in agency ownership.

We so loved learning from her. We know you will, too.

Key Takeaways

EPISODE: Liz Seelye from StarryEyed Strategy

1. Mentorship and Support Systems are Crucial | 00:13:50

When facing new challenges or feeling inadequate, seeking out mentors and building a strong support system can significantly boost confidence and competence. This was exemplified by Liz when she reached out to cross-functional partners at Yum Brands for mentorship to overcome her struggles in a new role.

2. Embrace Risk and Leap Before You're Fully Ready | 00:14:22

Taking calculated risks and starting new ventures even before feeling 100% prepared can lead to significant rewards and personal growth. The phrase "leap and the net will appear" encourages individuals to overcome the fear of not being qualified and trust in the process of learning by doing.

3. Shift from Scarcity to Abundance Mindset in Leadership | 00:20:22

Moving away from a scarcity mindset, where women in leadership might operate in self-protection due to competition, towards an abundance mindset fosters collaboration and support among women. This shift is crucial for empowering more women in leadership roles.

4. Overcome the "Overqualification Trap" | 00:20:51

Many, especially women, fall into the trap of believing they need to be overqualified or already performing a job at 100% before pursuing a new opportunity. Instead, the focus should be on whether one feels "called" to the endeavor, understanding that significant learning happens during the process of launching.

5. Envision Your Future and Dream-Line | 00:29:16

Actively envisioning and "dream-lining" what one wants their life and career to look like can provide clarity and motivation to create a plan to make those dreams a reality. This involves both acknowledging past achievements and setting clear, written goals for the future.
