How Lisa Slagle of Wheelie, Owns It

Today, we’re talking to Lisa Slagle from WHEELIE! Her firm specializes in video-centric campaigns and rebrands, but they say their creative is for people who thrive outside. As you might expect, she deals with a lot of clients in the outdoor industry.

She’s an avid outdoor enthusiast like me. And being in Colorado helps her with that endeavor. She skis, snowboards, hikes and also has the experience of running a marathon.

We talked about her book-in-progress which is about having creative ideas and how they live in you. Her work with other female leaders in her community. And yes … we addressed the issues around women in ownership, not just leadership.

She’s so very insightful and thoughtful. I really enjoyed my time with her. I know you’ll enjoy it, too.

Key Takeaways

EPISODE: Lisa Slagle from Wheelie

1. Creativity is a State of Being | 00:05:34

Creativity is not limited to traditional artistic fields; it's an inherent aspect of how individuals approach everyday tasks, from cooking a meal to raising children. Ideas can originate from anywhere if one is open to receiving them, suggesting that creative energy flows through people who are receptive to it.

2. Overcoming Insecurities as a Young Entrepreneur | 00:10:41

When starting a business at a young age, it's common to face perceptions of inexperience. Instead of letting this be a disadvantage, acknowledging and even playfully addressing these perceptions can turn them into a strength. This approach helps to disarm potential clients and demonstrates confidence and transparency.

3. The Evolving Nature of Entrepreneurial Challenges | 00:12:05

Challenges for agency owners evolve over time. Initially, the joy might come from hands-on creative work. As the business grows, the challenge shifts to managing a team and focusing on the bigger picture rather than getting bogged down in daily minutiae. Protecting one's energy by delegating and focusing on strategic oversight is crucial for long-term success and personal well-being.

4. Designing a Business That Aligns with Personal Values | 00:19:15

Instead of adhering to "the way" things are traditionally done in the industry, successful entrepreneurship involves defining and implementing "my way." This means building a business model that supports personal well-being, creative flow, and team needs (like flexible work hours for parents), even if it deviates from established norms. Aligning the business structure with personal values can lead to attracting dream clients and projects.

5. The "Espresso Shot" Approach to Marketing | 00:22:41

In an oversaturated advertising landscape, it's beneficial to distill marketing efforts into their most potent and impactful form—an "espresso shot." This approach involves reducing complexity, cutting unnecessary elements, and focusing on high-quality, straightforward communication to maximize impact, rather than getting lost in the "latte" of excessive layers and artificial components. This also extends to being mindful about over-reliance on external platforms like social media.
