How Katie Klumper of Black Glass Consulting, Owns It
Hi and welcome to the OWN IT podcast, where we celebrate the growing number of (women and non-binary) ad agency owners and talk about buying out of the boys’ club of advertising, one agency at a time.
Today I’m talking to Katie Klumper of Black Glass Consulting. After several years on the traditional agency side of the business, then time with Deloitte in the consulting vertical, Katie launched a firm that narrows its focus on helping CMOs be more successful in all walks of their challenges with business. We talked about that approach, but also how aware our clients and brands are of the gender gap in agency ownership, and what are they doing to close it in their efforts to be more inclusive and diverse.
It was yet again another useful conversation with a different perspective about how we can work toward a future with more diversity in agency ownership.

Key Takeaways
EPISODE: Katie Klumper of Black Glass Consulting
1. Define Success on Your Own Terms | [00:30:02]
Many people define success based on external factors like titles, company prestige, or industry awards. However, true fulfillment comes from pursuing what genuinely makes you happy and gives you purpose, rather than chasing superficial achievements that ultimately come and go.
2. Overcoming Self-Doubt and the Fear of Leaving a Prestigious Role | [00:10:34]
The biggest hurdle in starting one's own venture, especially after leaving a highly reputable organization, is often not logistical but psychological. Dealing with self-doubt and external questioning about such a move requires strong conviction in one's personal calling and understanding that a resume is just a piece of paper, secondary to personal happiness and growth.
3. The Illusion of Stability in the Advertising Industry | [00:14:08]
The advertising industry, despite perceptions, offers little true stability, as evidenced by frequent layoffs and constant flux. Real security comes from building a strong professional network, continuously upskilling, and cultivating valuable client relationships, making one marketable regardless of the company or resume.
4. The Critical Role of Diverse Ownership in Shaping Societal Messages | [00:24:22]
The lack of diversity in agency ownership, particularly female ownership, doesn't just impact the industry but profoundly affects the messages and perceptions disseminated into the world. Advertising shapes culture and society, and without diverse voices in leadership, the messages may lack the representation and positive impact needed for future generations.
