How Chelsea Matthews of TUX, Owns It
This week on Own It we’re talking to Chelsea Matthews from TUX, a creative agency with offices in L.A. and Montreal. Chelsea is also an owner beyond the agency world. She is also a partner in Highly Likely which has a number of casual dining restaurants in Southern California, and co-founded Candid, a content creation platform that was acquired in 2024.
We certainly dove into her ability to thrive balancing multiple ventures and used her amazing experience to get to her thoughts on closing the gender gap in agency ownership in the advertising business.
Chelsea is so interesting and smart. This was such a fun learning experience to get ot know her. We know you’ll enjoy this as much as we did.

Key Takeaways
EPISODE: Chelsea Matthews
1. Identify and embrace your personal "why" for ownership | 00:33:39
Ownership can bring various joys and challenges, and it's crucial to understand what specifically motivates you. For Chelsea, it's the joy of creating physical spaces where people can enjoy themselves, make art, and foster crafts, as well as the satisfaction of building and cultivating teams and cracking creative challenges. Understanding these personal motivations helps in navigating the demanding nature of business ownership.
2. Don't harbor ambitions; talk about what you want to do | 00:35:26
Sharing your aspirations and what you want to achieve openly with others is a powerful way to gain support and opportunities. People are more likely to help you or keep you in mind for relevant connections if they know your goals. This open communication is more effective than keeping your ambitions to yourself for fear of judgment or incomplete plans.
3. Don't wait for perfection; just start when 50% formed | 00:36:40
The desire for perfection can often lead to procrastination and missed opportunities. Instead, it's more effective to start when your idea or business plan is about 50% formed. The initial stages of a business, especially in creative fields, are often about the people, ideas, and chemistry involved, rather than a perfectly polished website or deck. Overthinking can lead to analysis paralysis, so taking action early is key.
