Key Takeaways
EPISODE: Barbara Pantuso and Lisa Reid from Nimble Works
1. Don't be afraid to take risks | 00:29:43
Many women, like Lisa, are intimidated by the unknowns and potential failures of starting a business. However, you don't need to have all the answers. Instead, have confidence in your ability to figure things out, either by yourselves, with your team, or by seeking advice from your network. Mistakes are inevitable, but learning to navigate them is part of the entrepreneurial journey.
2. Recognize and challenge unsustainable growth models | 00:31:30
The "rabid growth" mentality prevalent in many agencies, prioritizing constant sales and expansion without regard for human cost, can lead to burnout and deter women from leadership roles. It's crucial to question if such growth is truly worth the personal and societal cost. Redefining success to include sustainable practices and a healthier work-life balance is essential for attracting and retaining diverse talent, particularly women.
3. Embrace and integrate your full self into your work | 00:35:18
Historically, many women felt compelled to hide aspects of their personal lives (e.g., motherhood, caregiving responsibilities) to be perceived as professional. However, a modern, effective leadership style embraces who you are, recognizing that your personal experiences and empathy can enhance your professional capabilities. Creating a work environment that supports authenticity fosters a "nimble" team that thrives on diverse perspectives and experiences.
4. Build your business gradually and trust the process | 00:38:32
Entrepreneurship doesn't always have to be a giant leap. You can start small, perhaps by freelancing, gradually taking on more projects, and building a team over time. This "slow build" approach, like a semi-permeable membrane, reduces pressure and allows the business to unfold organically, solving problems as they arise rather than trying to anticipate every potential issue from the outset.
5. Take stock of your diverse skills and experiences | 00:40:19
Women often underestimate their own capabilities, focusing only on traditional career paths. However, skills gained from various life roles—such as organizing people, mediating family dynamics, or managing community projects—are invaluable in leadership, team building, and client relationships. Acknowledging these often-overlooked strengths can build confidence and equip women for entrepreneurial success.
