How Aleena Kuzma from FUSE Create, Owns It

This week on Own It we’re talking to Aleena Kuzma from FUSE Create. She’s based in the Toronto area in Canada but immigrated there from the middle east when she was a teenager. That sense of adventure and travel drives her creativity.

Aleena has been with FUSE for eight years and earned her way to a partnership role very early in her tenure. The firm promises to create work that turns heads. They are such a fantastic creative agency and we enjoyed getting to know it and her as we talked.

We loved hearing her journey and ideas about our industry. And we were thrilled to learn she and her husband are also expecting their first child soon.

Entering the advertising industry without a traditional background can be an advantage. It allows leaders to question established norms and processes without preconceived notions, fostering innovation and avoiding the "baggage" that comes with long-standing industry experience.

2. The Power of an Agency's Culture | 00:18:28

A strong, positive agency culture is a magical element that drives creativity, fosters employee loyalty, and is palpable to clients and potential employees. Protecting and nurturing this culture is crucial even amidst growth, as it's a core differentiator and source of energy.

3. Fostering a Diverse and Inclusive Advertising Industry | 00:21:17

The advertising industry needs to become more diverse and inclusive to create work that truly resonates with a global and diverse consumer base. This means intentionally creating opportunities for individuals who might not traditionally see a path into advertising and ensuring diversity in leadership to bring varied perspectives to the table.

4. Reclaiming Advertising's Role in Shaping Culture | 00:24:28

Advertising agencies have a responsibility to do more than just deliver on client requests; they should aim to create meaningful work that positively impacts culture and society. Despite the current climate of fear around taking stances, agencies should strive to change minds and influence culture in a declarative way, rather than solely operating in a "delivery mode."

5. Leveraging Empathy and Vulnerability as Female Leaders | 00:26:18

Female agency owners possess a superpower in their capacity for empathy and vulnerability, qualities often discouraged in traditional leadership models. Embracing these traits not only creates a more supportive and understanding work environment but also inspires other women to pursue leadership roles, showing them that there isn't one "masculine" way to lead.
